The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) has
released a three-phased study designed to provide an objective and
impartial evaluation of Department of Defense Domestic Dependent
Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and to help DoD determine
how best to deliver a quality education to military dependents in
the CONUS communities served by these schools. DoDEA operates 58
schools on 14 military installations within the United States. The
study has been in the works for approximately two years and has
caused considerable stress in the affected communities. In releasing
the information collected during the study to Congress and making
it public, DoDEA officials have pledged that consideration of the
study's recommendations have been suspended until the Base Realignment
and Closure (BRAC) Commission recommendations take legal effect.
